Teaching is a Vocation

Upon graduating with an undergraduate degree in International Business and Marketing, I found myself unfulfilled with a career in the Real Estate Development sector. If anything will teach you how to hustle, its Real Estate in NYC. It was the best of times, and it was the worst of times… boy, oh boy, are NYC landlords tough to work with, but I digress. I found myself filling up spare time with youth-related volunteer opportunities at various non-profits; this brought me joy. It became clear to me that I needed a work place where I could marry my passions for education and youth development; teaching came calling in the silence of my heart.

You know, interestingly enough, right before I decided to take a leap into the unknown seemingly mystical educational field, I can think back to a particular conversation that propelled my decision to leave Real Estate forward. A wise person once told me that when she forgot to appreciate the simple beauty of the daily sunset amidst her chaotic lifestyle, the realization grounded her. The conversation resonated with me in such a way because that was where I was at in my life. Her story was my story.

Naturally, a career leap in any direction can met by fear and doubt, however, since becoming a preschool teacher, I have only been met by pure joy, love, and purpose. I believe that teaching is a call that ignites the heart. This spark reverberates to the children that I experience. It is a vocation that requires selflessness, vulnerability, and is rooted in the present. I believe that teaching informs a special and hard to come by mindset of resilience. It is continual shifts in perspective, the ability to flow and recycle difficult moments as teachable moments. A vocation where conversations and discussions are conscious access points with power to break intergenerational cycles.

As an educator, I realize and welcome the weighted responsibility of creating strong foundational skills for my students. What a beautiful dance I am able to partake in with my students on a daily basis. Surely each day in the classroom doesn’t feel like Disneyland, but those are character building days... and for those I am eternally grateful!
